Riks last battle
Thankyou all for your kind words. Riki-lee was indeed a very special girl.

On saturday night she jumped in mums water feature and came out limping. She was very arthritic in her back legs and I was sure she'd just pulled a muscle. But on closer examination I found a fracture in her tibia and called the vet. It was late by then so I strapped and splinted her leg until we could go to our vet the next morning.
X-rays showed not only a fracture but a bone that was riddled with cancer. In true Rik form, I had no idea cos she was constantly happy, being her clever self and always wanting to play ball. Even on her last day doped up on morphine.
For those of you that knew Rik, you'd know that she was voice command trained. I stood infront of her and said "last one rik". She caught the ball and took it to her bed and that's where she stayed.

I knew she was getting old and had already looked into cremation and had it all organised cos I knew I wouldn't be able to think when the day came.

The vet and I agreed that because of her already arthritic back end, she wouldn't cope with the amputation. It was a decision I had no choice in, and for that I'm thankful. Having to decide the precise moment to let them go is the hardest part. I asked Rik "darlin, do you want me to let you go ?" and she lifetd her weary head and licked my eye.

I spent the night with her on my bed (for 14 years she's slept on her own bed at the base of mine) but she was incontinant, so I spent the night catching drips as she couldn't even turn to lick herself. It was the longest night of my life.

The next morning I carried her out to her bed in the loungeroom and that's where she stayed. chewing on her ball, playing with millie and winking at me at incredibly poinient times. She was so brave. Though she was in pain, she smiled and played with millie as only Rik would. Unable to move, but playing with her mouth, letting millie lie next to her and do the same.

Millie was the sister she had always been. Loyal to her best mate, not leaving her side. She knew and I know Rik knew aswell.

The vet came, I lit a candle and held her as she went to sleep. Mum came to be with me during this, the hardest moment of my life.

I brushed her one last time and wrapped her in her favourite blanket, millie watching, sniffing and even tried to get into the blanket with her. It was then that my heart broke and I haven't stopped crying since. I have never been so sad!

I was 20 when I got Rik, I'll be 35 this year. She has stood by me through the toughest of times. Through my alcoholism, through my constant house moving, always coming back to be with me to play and lick my tears when I was down. We had a great life together. We travelled around Australia fruit-picking, we went on too many bushwalks to count, we swam at beaches ignoring 'no dog' rules, we did it all Rik and I. My best mate, my constant, my partner in a life of ups and downs. I couldn't have asked for a better friend.

Now Millie and I are mourning, I'm trying to be strong for her, knowing that she lost her best mate too.

I know time will get me out of bed and back to life, but for now I just hurt. I hurt more than I could have imagined. I'm single, having had a couple of go's at love, but Rik was it for me. She was my girl. I'll forever miss her!

The hardest goodbye
Goodbye my best mate. I'll always hold you tight in my heart. I know there's no more pain for you and I hope you have a million balls to chase and catch in that big dog park in the sky. Thankyou for your loyalty and unconditional love. I love you Riki-Lee, my special girl!

Cocky love

This link is to a photography journal of the story of two cockatoos, one domestic and one wild. The female has a bad wing and cannot fly and she is courted by a wild male. He manages to get her cage open and the relationship continues from there. They even raise a family. These are some wonderful photos and a great story. Be sure and click next at the bottom of the page to see their hatchling's. There are four or five pages of pictures and info...be sure to keep going to the next page at the bottom...
Nice story...enjoy

(that's how the email read. Having seen the site, I think the male was helping the female escape that prison! Or taking liberties...ah men, they just can't help emselves ;)

I made a funny
You know you're a W.I.R.E.S. volunteer rescuer/carer when:

* You shop, not looking at the item in the container, but at how you can use it as food tray/storage container

* You walk to the 'feeding station' to make a cuppa instead of your 'coffee station'

* Your kitchen has 'stations'

* 9 - 5 is meaningless

* Your ice cubes aren't ice

* Your coffee supply is as well stocked as your wombaroo products

* You feel compelled to tell complete strangers fascinating facts about Wildlife

* You're broke

* You never finish a coffee before it gets cold (thank goodness for Coke and Pepsi)

* You actually appreciate the role of a spiderweb

* You're digging for worms like you did when you were a kid

* Half your car is taken up by rescue equipment

* You have an answering machine that can be heard from any roo in the house and you screen.

* Your house is a zoo and you wouldn't have it any other way! :)

I make me chuckle :p

AIC (animals in care)
1 juvie butcherbird
1 baby lorikeet
1 sub-adult Torresian Crow
1 Eastern Rosella (soon to be 2)

Yesterday I released the big female bluey into my backyard.

The place is really coming together. I now have a WIRES sign out the front, and I'm looking towards getting this property sponsored by the retirement village that it backs onto and is owned by. Hopefully they will allow me to stay (the rest of the houses get demolished for new retirement homes in a few years) And this place can be used as a pets as therapy place. That's my latest thinking anyway, so we'll see what happens.

I couldn't be happier. I get to spend my days playing with animals. A childhood dream come true! :D

hope you're all well. Don't let the crazy season get to ya. Enjoy the time you have to relax and appreciate this gorgeous world!

Website is updated again with new pics and goings on. http://soulfires.bravehost.com/Animals.html

peace out

Oh, and whoever it was that wanted vegemite in the States, I have postable sized packets now, so lemme know who you are cos I've forgotten :p

We're killing the earth
Conservation has never been more in the public eye than when Steve Irwin died. But that just leaves most of us going "HOOFUCKINRAY!" cos the world needs to wake up and listen! THERE ARE MORE ANIMALS ON THIS PLANET THAN HUMANS! Strange how when you lose something you suddenly get "global warming" GLOBAL WARMING MY ASS!!!! WE HUMANS HAVE DECADES OF KNOWLEDGE THAT WE'VE IGNORED! WE NEGLECTED THE LAND SO IT'S PAYING US BACK AND WE NEED TO SAVE IT OR WE WILL ALL DIE.

no I'm not being dramatic, I'm just making a point. Even back in 1989 John Williamson, who's gained new recognition since Steve's death (which is another good thing) was singing about conservation. And I bet if you heard the song you'd know it, ok maybe not alll of you but look....

Words and Music by John Williamson

What am I gonna do - what about the future?
Gotta draw the line without delay
Why shouldn't I get emotional - the bush is sacred
Ancient life will fade away

Over the hill they go, killing another mountain
Gotta fill the quota - can't go slow
Huge machinery wiping out the scenery
One big swipe like a shearer's blow

Rip rip woodchip - turn it into paper
Throw it in the bin, no news today
Nightmare, dreaming - can't you hear the screaming?
Chainsaw, eyesore - more decay

Remember the axemen knew their timber
Cared about the way they brought it down
Crosscut, blackbutt, tallowood and cedar
Build another bungalow - pioneer town

I am the bush and I am koala
We are one - go hand in hand
I am the bush like Banjo and Henry
It's in my blood - gonna make a stand

Rip rip woodchip - turn it into paper
Throw it in the bin, no news today
Nightmare, dreaming - can't you hear the screaming?
Chainsaw, eyesore - more decay

Rip rip woodchip - turn it into paper
Throw it in the bin - don't understand
Nightmare, dreaming - can't you hear the screaming?
Stirs my blood - gonna make a stand

too long coming
fuck, it's been so long since I posted, that the format has changed! *admires the new page* ..weird...anyway..

I've been flat out like a lizard drinking! Mind you, my bluey is quite slow to drink so I dunno if t hat's appropriate.

My days go like this..

Up at 5
open up the house
coffee(I never get to the bottom before it's cold)
turn on sunrise with mel & Koshie
dogs get chook necks, arthritis tablet shoved in riks
mix roo meat, egg shell, insectivore mix
Go out and feed the crow
mix chicken mince, insectivore mince for buthcerbird
make up a bottle of nectivore mix for lorri
sit and look at emails while I have another ciggie and slurp coffee
laugh at Mel and Koshie (cry at Grant leaving..only sunrisers would understand that)
strart the hourly feeding of lorri and butcherbird
clean out cages
wash feeding impliments
sit and have a ciggie and another slurp of coffee
realise I've forgotten to take my pills
give the dogs attention
rinse and repeat every hour
take rescue calls and try to make it out the door after a feeding
by 11 it's time to go across and check on the 86 yr old across the road (I finally got her 51 yr old son into rehab - shit gotta go there tomorrow and visit him) yes, so I do her dishes, have a cuppa and come back for the next feed.
spend an hour lying on the carpet in the wires room teaching butcherbird to forrage for food and meal worms
race off to release a brush turkey that I held overnight and released
crow gets lunch
tired yet? I usually am
make phonecalls to MOPS (members of the public) and other carers
listen to mum prattle on about wiping her ass
bored yet?
take the babies outside for 2 hours of sun (vitamin D)
clean the wires room while they're out
emails - it's the main way us carers communicate cos you can reply when ya not feeding/cleaning/setting up rescued buggers etc
bring the babies back inside
if I'm luck I nap around 2-4 for an hour
wake up
listen to the shebang on MMM while I work on my latest cage making project in the back room
clean impliments thouroughly (I hate that word) for tomorrow
check on babies
by now it's 7pm and I'm ready for bed!

ok, so that's the routine...understand why I haven't updated recently? good :)

Today I'm going to a local vets christmas party to represent WIRES. We do this cos the vets are so good to us, and when they offer for us to set up a table, we dont say no. Did I mention we need money!? 20 years we've been going...3 years ago we almost went belly up. Now considering we take an average of 237 calls a day, what would our wildlife, let alone MOP's do without us!? I spend around 40 buck a week on animals in care, include petrol for rescues and it's no wonder ppl quit being a volunteer! ATM I'm the favourite of the branch :D I got to go to Taronga zoo with a Lyre bird, omg I cant wait to own my own zoo. Don't laugh, it'll happen :) A WIRES zoo hospital. Just like Steve's in QLD, but smaller :/

Add to that, the fact that I did my official statement last monday and have been fixing the draft emailed to me for the past 2 days to get it just right - no fucker is getting off on a technicality! - but it means 'going there' in my head, which is a mind fuck!

shit it's 7am....gotta feed brb

7.40am ..that's how long it takes me to do feeds and organise their lil houses. Cos they're babies, and they only know me as mum. I cant just go in, chuck food at em and walk out. Nope. I gotta teach them how to eat on their own for when they're released, and that takes tim. ok, I better go do stuff. I'll update my site with pics so check it out to see what I'm doing :D

have a great day :)

Head Count and rambles
1 Juvie Lorri in isolation
1 very badly dog attacked bluey
1 baby top knot (crested) pigeon on 3 hourly feeds
2 noisy mynahs - 1 juvie & 1 baby on 1 hourly feeds

1 very tired but happy souly :D

That's why I haven't been posting. Any spare time is spent sleeping! I've opened my new community wires_australia You don't have to be a wires member to join so if you're interested in what wires carers do and wanna see some cool pics, come and join :) - shameless advertising I know :P

In other news...Mum's 70th is tomorrow, so we're all off in limos to ummmm some fancy hotel, to sit at the chefs table in some fancy restraunt. It'll be fun, but cos no-one is driving, they'll all get drunk so who knows how it'll turn out!

I'm doing my official statement of complaint for my court case on monday, so I'm a bit nervous!

I've been going to physio cos my neck and shoulders have gotten really bad and with this Post Hepatic Neuralgia pain, it's more than I can handle. I've been accepted into the pain clinic at RNSH and sent off the pre-appointment paperwork. The first appt. goes for 5 - 6 hours! I'm also booked in to the infectious diseases clinic at Concord so I can be poked and prodded and hopefully get some answers to my re-occuring shingles. They have no explanation for it or a vaccine or an answer to the PHN (cos the vaccine is the same as the chicken pox one, so it's in my system. Just that most people only get it once and I've had it more than 10 times! ) They thought it was my immune system but that's turned up negative. whatever..I'm SO over it!

blab blab blab blah blah blah that's all folks :)
